Introduction

Huizen is a charming town located in the province of North Holland, near Amsterdam. Situated on the shores of the Gooimeer lake, it combines natural beauty, history, and a relaxed atmosphere. Once a traditional fishing village, Huizen has grown into a modern town while maintaining its authentic character.

History

Huizen has a long history dating back to at least the year 1382. The name “Huizen” (meaning “houses”) refers to the early presence of stone houses, which were uncommon in the region at that time.

Originally an agricultural village, Huizen developed into a fishing community when locals began fishing during winter. The construction of a harbour around 1850 helped the town grow into an important fishing center.

After the Zuiderzee was closed off in 1932, the sea turned into a lake (IJsselmeer/Gooimeer), and Huizen shifted its economy towards trade, industry, and residential development.

What to See & Do

Huizen offers a variety of activities for visitors:

  • Oude Haven (Old Harbour) – Enjoy restaurants, terraces, and views over the water
  • Nautical Quarter (Nautisch Kwartier) – A lively area with shops and a marina
  • Huizer Museum – Learn about the town’s fishing and cultural history
  • Botterwerf – Discover traditional fishing boats and maritime heritage
  • Cycling & Walking – Explore nature around the Gooi region and the lakes

The town is perfect for relaxing walks, watersports, and enjoying Dutch coastal culture.

Nature & Location

Huizen is uniquely located between the Gooimeer lake and the heathlands of the Gooi nature reserve. This makes it ideal for outdoor activities like cycling, sailing, and hiking
